COMPOUND FRAMING

First

Martin Heidegger claims that “space” is established when elements form relationships between elements. An open field is one thing, but what happens when its borders are connected by its contents? Heidegger uses a bridge as an example of a device of a space.

So, we might say:
Spaces are composed of landmarks which are meaningfully connected.

Second

Jacques Derrida’s method for deconstruction expands on Kant’s ideas regarding the frame. Derrida argues that a frame acts as the boundary between an artistic work and its environment, and it is free of unnecessary ornament. The frame becomes simultaneously interior and exterior to the piece it encloses in its lack of ornament and relevance to the inner content.

Now

We propose the idea of compound framing.

Compound framing considers design systems as frames for content structures, providing landmarks along which the content establishes a space in the mind. A design system is a frame, which is embedded in artefactual frames embedded in presentational frames. Hence, a poster series is created and framed by a design system, framed again by the margins of the posters, and once more by their containers: hence the system has undergone compound framing.

Essentially, compound framing considers design systems as frames for content, content which was pulled from an overload of unorganized, unnecessary information.

To update the earlier statement:
Content is information framed by meaningfully connected design elements.

We would argue that the effects of compound framing may often have deeper significance than the everyday viewer may consider.
What could the use of a margin say about a design?

What could its method of presentation say about a design?

What could these two aspects say about the design’s relationship to its environment?

What could the use of a design system say about a design?

Not only do we recognize the meaningful value of design in organizing information, we understand it to be, for better or worse, a reflection of the culture it belongs to. There is always some significance in the methods of compound framing, be it harmful or beneficial, and we can push to remain conscious of that. Our Party wants to utilize design methodology, particularly the idea of compound framing, which is fundamental to our platform, for the enhancement of policy-making and information internalization in our Post-Political world.
